Help Jess Fight Back After Traumatic Brain Injury
Our sister, daughter, wife, and friend Jess is fighting her way back to us, one brave step, one stubborn push, one moment at a time.
On July 24, 2025, Jess was hit by a car while riding her bike and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury along with multiple fractures. She was rushed to the Neuro Trauma ICU in Portland, placed on life support, surrounded by machines doing the work her body couldn’t.
For weeks, we stood beside her bed not knowing what the next hour would bring.
There were days when doctors didn’t know if she would ever wake up. There were moments we feared we would lose her forever.
But Jess held on.
She survived the impossible.
She opened her eyes.
She began breathing on her own.
She started showing us, piece by piece, that she is still right here.
After more than two months in the ICU, Jess is now in a rehabilitation facility in Portland. She is relearning everything — how to move, how to speak, how to eat, how to communicate, how to connect.
And in just the past week, she has:
- Stood up 8 times in therapy
- Fed herself yogurt, pudding, and applesauce
- Drank sips of water and juice on her own
- Typed her needs on a phone and tablet
- Used thumbs-up and gestures to communicate
- Spoken short phrases like “love you,” “yes,” and my favorite, “mom, shhh”
- Laughed at jokes
- Reached out and held our hands
These moments may look small, but they are mountains she is climbing every single day.
The Next Phase: A Critical Window
Jess’s brain is still healing. Progress is happening, fast. This is the window where intensive rehabilitation matters most.
We are working with her medical team to have her transferred to Craig Hospital in Colorado, one of the top brain injury rehab centers in the country. Craig specializes in TBI recovery and offers the strongest chance for Jess to regain independence, speech, memory, mobility, and more of herself.
This could change her future.
Why We Need Help
Insurance coverage is uncertain, and some costs are not covered at all, especially transportation to Colorado.
Your support will help cover:
- Air ambulance transfer
- Any rehab costs not covered by insurance
- Communication + mobility equipment
- Medications, therapies, adaptive supports
- Travel and lodging so loved ones can safely stay with Jess during out-of-state care (this is essential for TBI recovery, familiar support matters)
If Craig Hospital isn’t approved, or if insurance only partially covers treatment, every dollar will still go directly toward her ongoing recovery — advanced rehab, outpatient programs, and continued care.
Estimated Costs
Air Ambulance to Craig Hospital (If needed): $25,000 – $80,000
Ground Medical Transport (If Jess is stable enough): $3,000 – $10,000
Inpatient rehab costs not covered by insurance: $100,000+
Communication + mobility devices: $2,000 – $20,000
Adaptive + accessibility equipment: $5,000 – $20,000
Travel/lodging for caregiver (required for out-of-state care): $8,000 – $20,000
There may be additional costs depending on length of rehab and insurance decisions. Our fundraising goal may increase as we learn more.
Who Jess Is
Jess is 38.
She’s a marathon runner, a gamer, a loyal friend, the person who would (and did) show up for anyone. She is a badass business owner who is always a step ahead of the trend. She is the kind of stubborn that moves mountains.
This isn’t the race she trained for but she’s running it anyway.
And she fully plans on winning.
Her laughter is still here.
Her determination is still here.
Jess is still here.
