Help Jess, Fergus and Sorley unhomed by tenement collapse
Don protégé
Hi, my name is Kate and a dear friend of mine, Jess and her family have recently become homeless, so I've set up this fundraiser to offer a bit of help for them in this time of crisis.
Jess, Fergus and wee Sorley have lived in Pollokshields for some years in their own lovely flat. As many of you will know, Jess is a very talented artist and Fergus has worked with an orchard -planting organisation for many years.
In 2020, part of the tenement they live in caught fire, and due to long-standing disputes between the neighbouring home insurance companies, this section of the building was never repaired, leaving the burned roof open to the elements for five years! As a result of this and Glasgow City Council having not lifted a finger in aid of everyone's safety, this part of their building collapsed in mid-July. Jess, Fergus and Sorely were immediately evacuated from their home and are currently being told they will not be able to access their house to reach any belongings until their building is stabilised - which could take up to a year!
As a result, they have been flung into crisis which has affected their living situation significantly. Their home insurance company is currently refusing to help them, even failing as much as offering financial support/ or covering alternative accommodation in the meantime. They have found a place in Glasgow they can stay temporarily, but since this has happened they have been presented with mounting unforeseen costs, a large part of which a home insurance company would normally be expected to cover. They have also lost income due to the fact they have been unable to access certain things in their home, and this will continue to happen for the coming months.
To make things even worse, they are currently being told that they, along with other tenement owners will have to pay for the cost of the reconstruction. This is absolutely shocking and I cannot believe the lack of support Jess and Fergus has received from the company as well as Glasgow City Council throughout, when the council have known since the fire in 2020 the building would eventually crumble.
So I'm putting this out to anyone who feels able to support this wee family of freelancers to help contribute to the costs of:
- having to buy lots of essentials all over again like kitchen utensils, clothing, cleaning products etc (£600)
- cover 4 months of rent (for now). It is very difficult to know how exactly to budget for this because they do not know for sure how long they will not be able to access their home, but this would be a start at least (£700 incl bills x 4months)
- go toward loss of earnings due to the fact that they have been unable to carry on working during this time of crisis and also due to the fact they are unable to access all of their valuable items (£1000 estimated for now...)
- cover lawyer fees who they will consult with to help navigate their rights. (£300)
This is just about helping them with immediate basic costs, while the outcome of any payouts from their insurance is still unknown. Jess and Fergus could face much more financial strain as they may have to continue living in this way for up to a year and as said before, front reconstruction costs. But for now, this will be a massive help to them.
All support received through this fund will go directly to them, and I can only imagine how awful it must feel to not only be in such a devastating situation and dealing with enormous amounts of stress, but how uncomfortable it is to ask people for financial support. Which is why I'm reaching out on their behalf as a pal to take some of the burden off them.
Thank you so much!!
Much love from myself, Jess, Fergus and Sorley xxxx
