Please Help Jay and Jenn Recover from Devastating Scam
Donation protected
My name is Genevieve and I'm raising funds for my brother and his family. Last week, my brother, Jason and his family fell victim to wire fraud. They were scammed out of their entire $130,000 (40%) down payment on a new house. They have talked to the bank, law enforcement, the FBI, and have been told the chances of recouping the money is next to 0%.
About 2 weeks ago, during a busy time (nephew's arm was broken, hospital appointments, and work), my sister in law, Jen, received an urgent email about the closing of their new house, including their real estate agent's name, address and other pertinent information. The email indicated that they needed to initiate a wire transfer immediately. With everything going on, and Jenn being in love with the house, the idea of losing it would have devastated her, so she initiated the transfer. They thought nothing of the transfer until last week when their agent told them they needed to get a cashier's check for closing. Jenn explained that she already transferred the money. That's when everything fell apart and they realized they were scammed. Looking back at the email, there were minor signs (misspellings, incorrect zip codes) that indicated it was a scam. Jenn is one of the sweetest, kindest people I've ever met and my brother is as hard working as they come, and a great father. This is completely devastating, they have been working and saving for over 15 years to get their new home.
The silver lining is that Jenn's mother and father have loaned the $130,000 to cover the down payment so that they are still able to close on the house. However, Jenn's mother recently retired. She used the majority of her retirement fund to lend the money. The main priority has become paying back Jenn's parents so that they can once again have a retirement fund to rely on. Even upon paying everybody back (which will take years), Jay and Jenn are still out $130,000 that they will never see again. Their hopes and dreams for the future have been shattered and their idea of retirement has been completely altered.
Please consider donating to Jay, Jenn and Dillon to help them try and get through this difficult time. Every little bit helps them to begin rebuilding their future. Share this story to help spread awareness and prevent your loved ones from losing years and years of savings as these scams are on the rise.
