My name is Jasmine, and I’m a 37-year-old mother of four. Last year on Valentine’s Day, I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. The news turned my world upside down. I had to stop working, and my partner was laid off in January when I had a bilateral mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection. Because of a positive lymph node, they removed 10 nodes from my right armpit and arm, and I haven’t regained full motion or strength in my upper body. Since then, life has been a series of challenges—most recently, we’re facing eviction in just a few days with nowhere to go.
After my diagnosis, I was so scared that I delayed treatment for six months. When I finally returned to my doctors, I learned the cancer had spread. I had surgery in January, but the stress of eviction and court dates forced me to postpone treatments. I started an intense chemotherapy regimen, but I’ve had to delay sessions because we’re in the middle of moving and I’m not even sure where we’ll go next.
I was originally receiving treatment locally, but I didn’t feel safe or listened to by my care team. I made the difficult decision to switch to a new oncologist at OHSU, which is three hours away. The distance has made every appointment a challenge, especially without a reliable vehicle.
We’re hoping to raise enough to secure an RV so we have a safe place to stay at a family member’s property until we can get back on our feet. A dependable car would make my cancer treatment trips to OHSU possible and less stressful. I would appreciate any support I can get—life has been throwing so much at us, starting with my father’s unexpected death in 2019. I’ve always tried to help others and raised my children to do the same. I know times are hard for everyone, and I’m not expecting anything, but if you can find it in your heart to help us during this difficult time, it would mean the world. We have to be out before the 22nd, and I am so weak and drained from chemotherapy. Thank you for reading and for any support you can give.
