My name is Janeice Opunui. I am grandma to Kaimana and Kapena. The twins were born healthy and were loving life. When they turned about 18 months old, things started changing for them. They started losing their abilities to move and talk. By the time they were 3, they were diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy. It is a terminal illness, and we were told they would not live to be 5. Kaimana lived to be 6, and Kapena just passed away at age 9. They were bedridden and on feeding tubes since the age of 4. Mom and dad were not able to work as the boys' immune systems shut down, and the care the boys needed was 24 hours a day. Any money they got went to supplies and bills for the boys
Now with the boys gone, mom and dad need to start a new life. They have nothing. They have been living in a camping trailer for over 5 years, secluded on their great grandfather's property in 8 feet of snow during the winters. Mom and dad have nothing. They need to be able to find a place to live and jobs to help them.
