I’m fundraising to support my sister and her husband who are going though the hardest times of their lives and to help my little nephew have his parents close by and everything he needs for the rest of his journey.
On Thursday 4th May my beautiful nephew Jackson was born, he came out crying and from that moment we knew he was a fighter. After being told he may not survive birth due to having Ventriculomegaly (an excess amount of fluid & pressure on his brain) that would mean he may not be able to breath or swallow on his own.
Not being able to hold him at delivery and seeing him briefly for a few seconds he then got taken straight down to ICU and was was put on oxygen (only 30%) Again he amazed us all.
On Friday 5th May Jackson went for an MRI, the surgeon told my sister and her partner they would need to operate that evening due to the amount fluid and pressure on the brain. You can imagine how they felt finding out that their baby at only a day old was having to go for brain surgery so soon. They were told he should be down for an hour or two where they would fit a shunt that would drain the fluid from the brain down to his stomach & relieve the pressure on his brain. This shunt will be with him for life. Over 3 & half hours went by (they were told it would only be 1-1.5 hours) at 10:30pm the surgeon called them and said he wanted to meet them. He explained to them that when he operated the pressure was so high that the fluid actually shot out of the skull where the incision was made, plus the top of skull (where the two sides meet) had a gap as large as the surgeon’s finger. With over 15 years experience he said he had never seen anything like this. They fitted the shunt and were told they would keep a real close eye on him incase of infection/seizures and bleeds on the brain and he would have regular MRI’s every few days to see if the fluid is draining and the pressure is releasing as it should.
my sister and her partner waited outside of surgery for him to be wheeled back up to ICU, being told jackson wouldn’t be aware of anything and would be fast asleep as he had anaesthetic, he was wheeled out of surgery to which my brother in law said ‘Jax, daddy’s here’. To the shock of eveyone Jackson opened his eyes to his daddy’s voice. As this point we knew we had a little warrior, and just how amazing our little Jax is.
Back to NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for our little warrior and his lung collapsed… thankfully due to the nurses and drs quick intervention they managed to stabilise the situation quickly. All this in the first 18 hours of Jackson’s life, but this little warrior was still fighting.
Jackson is undergoing MRI’s evey couple of days to keep a check that the pressure and fluid is going down and to make sure there are no brain bleeds (so far so good) They also have to monitor any infection and blockages with the shunt as this would mean immediate life saving surgery again.
As you can imagine no parent wants to be away from there child at any time especially a time like this, aswell as jackson needing his parents close by.
My sister/bro inlaw live no where near the hospital, the commute just 1 way can take up to 3 hours, plus needing to be as close as possible to be able to get to Jackson quickly they have been staying in a hotel close by… the current total for this is already is over £500 and that is with them giving my sister an NHS discount! They have no idea how long his stay will be plus on top off food costs, car parking (£25 a day) etc..
My brother in law is self employed running a small window cleaning business so not working means he is not getting paid, you can imagine the strain on them and what there going through… that’s why I have decided to make this go fund me to help take the strain off them as much as I can, so they haven’t got to worry about this aswell as eveything else and to contriube for over night stays so they can stay by his side at this awful time. Plus anything to help with his long term needs/care as we have no idea as to the side effects from all this. They have been told everything from no quality of life (with him not taking, walking, being able to see/hear) we just continue to have hope that whatever happens with know our Jackson Koa (meaning warrior) Hawgood will keep fighting
Whatever anyone is willing to contribute I will be enternailly thankful… ❤️
I will be putting updates on here off our little warrior and showing you all just how amazing he is
