Keep the Garcia-Galindo family together -help Jacinto!

On the morning of August 16th, around 8am, my father, Jacinto Garcia, was followed and detained by ICE agents while on his way to work. He was taken into custody at the Home Depot on Rhode Island Avenue in Washington, DC. This sudden and traumatic event has had my family asking questions about the future.

My father was born in Guatemala and came to the United States when he was just 16 years old. Since then, he has spent nearly three decades building a life here—working tirelessly in plumbing, construction, and other physically demanding jobs that many would shy away from. Despite never receiving a formal education, he’s known by those around him for his quiet strength, sharp mind, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.

Jacinto is not just a skilled laborer—he’s a loving father, a devoted partner, and a loyal friend. He has raised three children in this country: my older sibling who is 24, myself at 18, and our youngest brother, who is only 9 years old. His absence has left a painful void in our lives. We missed celebrating his 46th birthday together on August 17th, and he wasn’t there to walk my little brother to his first day of school. These small but meaningful moments are now marked by grief and uncertainty.

Mi padre nació en Guatemala y llegó a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía solo 16 años. Desde entonces, ha pasado casi tres décadas construyendo una vida aquí, trabajando incansablemente en fontanería, construcción y otros trabajos físicamente exigentes que muchos evitarían. Jacinto no es solo un trabajador experto, es un padre amoroso, un socio devoto y un amigo leal. Ha criado a tres hijos en este país: mi hermano mayor, que tiene 24 años, yo, de 18, y nuestro hermano menor, que solo tiene 9 años. Su ausencia ha dejado un vacío doloroso en nuestras vidas. Echamos de menos celebrar su 46 cumpleaños juntos el 17 de agosto, y él no estaba allí para acompañar a mi hermano pequeño a su primer día de escuela. Estos pequeños pero significativos momentos ahora están marcados por el dolor y la incertidumbre.
