Help a Disabled Single Mom & Her Kids Stay Housed
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Delphine. My friend J, a formerly unhoused disabled Black single mom and DV survivor living on CalWORKs with two young boys and zero child support, is struggling to make ends meet.
Permanently housed last year for the first time after many years in shelters, with assistance from the community through this fundraiser, J and her kids were able to move into their new home on May 1st.
Without child support from the kids' estranged father and only a meager fixed income from CalWORKs, along with food stamps that only stretch for one week out of each month and a utility discount program, J has struggled to cover the costs of rent, food, beds, clothing, bills and other necessities. She urgently needs to raise $164 for July rent no later than July 5th to prevent being charged an additional $200 in late fees, and if it's not paid in full by that date, she will have to pay $503 by July 24th or her landlord will serve her with a three-day eviction notice.
J also still needs to raise $524 for her past-due April rent at her previous apartment, $200 for food and transportation, and $400 to recoup the cost of the minimum payment she made on her utility bills, which I loaned her three months ago to prevent PG&E shutting off her gas and electricity. J's only vehicle was repossessed and auctioned last year, so she needs money for transit fair.
Her kids love their new suburban home in East Contra Costa County, 32 miles away from the bug-infested apartment building where where they lived before.
Thankfully, J was recently approved by a program that forgave her past due utility bill balance of $1,000 at her previous apartment. In March and April, she was able to keep the lights on only because I borrowed money to cover her minimum payment of $400, which she paid on the deadline a month ago to avoid a utility shut-off. Since I had to go into debt to send her those funds on time, we need to raise the latter amount to recoup that cost.
Altogether her remaining costs come to $1,087 plus $200 for food and transportation, and potentially another $200 in late fees if she is unable to raise the remaining $164 for July rent by the 5th.
In order for J and her kids to get a fresh start with stable housing at their new home, she is counting on us to come through for her.
Please donate as you are able, and please share this fundraiser with your friends, family, classmates, co-workers and community!
