My name is Izzy, and I’m a high school senior from a low-income, single-parent household. Last summer, I purchased a 2012 Buick Regal from a dealership, hoping it would be a reliable way to get me and my younger brother to school and help me reach my college goals. Unfortunately, both the dealership and the auto shop I visited before buying the car misled me about its condition. Now, the engine and camshaft position sensor are failing, and I’m facing the possibility of needing major repairs or even a replacement vehicle.

Having a working car is essential for my family. I drive my brother to high school and to his job several times a week, and I rely on my car to get to my own PSEO college classes in Minneapolis, which are an hour away. I also work at a daycare, caring for elementary school kids after my classes. Without a car, I can’t keep up with my responsibilities at home, work, or school, and my path to a four-year college and a career in STEM or medicine would be at risk.
