Hello, my name is Francis. I am a 39-year-old man from the Dominican Republic. I was born with a genetic condition called Emery Dreifuss muscular dystrophy. This disease wastes away my muscles and affects all of my voluntary and cardiac muscles. This makes it difficult for me to walk and also makes it difficult for me to use my arms. My sons, Alan (9 years old) and Jeshua (18 years old), were also born with muscular dystrophy. Over the years, my disease has increasingly affected my health and ability to work. My heart has been significantly affected, as I rely on a pacemaker. In the Dominican Republic, doctors informed me that one day we would die as our disease progressed and our muscles slowly deteriorated. They gave us no hope, and the lack of resources and medical care didn't make it any easier, so we came to the United States for help on a temporary visa, and our youngest son, Alan, was born here. My oldest son, Joshua, was operated on and has had multiple surgeries (on his feet and spine), but he still requires a wheelchair to get around. Alan, who recently started walking, can't lift his head and walks with an arched back. Our lives haven't been easy either in New York or in my home country, the Dominican Republic. My wife, Valentina, is the sole financial supporter of the family because she can work. She has also struggled with mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, after enduring a full year of harassment from other tenants while living in a shelter. Our visa has expired, and we've tried working with pro bono lawyers for the past 10 years, but there's no hope. We want to hire a lawyer to help my wife, my oldest son, and me obtain legal residency, but we don't have the money to pay the high legal fees. My children are still very young, and with intensive physical therapy and treatment, they will have a chance at a better quality of life, but this won't be possible unless we fix our legal status.
