On September 7, Hurricane Lowell struck Kauaʻi with winds over 100 mph, forcing Ilima to evacuate the oceanfront property she calls home. When Ilima returned, the destruction was overwhelming. Roofs had been blown off. Flooding tore through the property. The kitchen and outdoor bathroom shower were destroyed, and structures across the land were badly damaged. Fruit trees, gardens, and years of cultivated permaculture land were severely impacted. The danger is still immediate: broken tree limbs are hanging overhead, and debris and damaged items remain scattered across the property, creating serious safety hazards that must be cleared before rebuilding can begin.

This is not only storm damage. It is damage to Ilima’s home, land, daily life, and source of stability.
