Free Grocery Store & Mobile Grocery Market

Positive American Youth a-food-pantry-powerhouse is about to take its biggest step yet by opening a free grocery store & free mobile grocery market  to serve the Metro Atlanta area.

“After speaking with several county, city and state elected officials during a summit regarding community enrichment,” the nonprofit’s director Maurice Swiney said. “I told them that the only way to end hunger in the our community is for a free grocery store accessible to people that don't have the funds for food.”

The idea for the free grocery store would be to partner with other agencies to aid families that qualify. Positive American Youth gives away millions of dollars in aid every year. By having a "Free Market" we are able to help families in need without them dealing with the stigma or possible embarrassment of going to a "food pantry" per say.

“The goal is for these families to be able to utilize the store for one year and then have the resources to not need to use the store after that,” Swiney said. We will post job openings, and have employers frequent the facility to solicit opportunities.

Local nonprofit Positive American Youth will begin signing up families later this month to use the store which is situated in Austell and will have hours of Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the mobile food market taking place bi-monthly on various sides of town’s identified as food deserts.

Positive American Youth Executive Director Maurice Swiney said the mission of the free grocery store is to help families become self-sufficient. The store will go beyond the nonprofit’s work as a food pantry and will serve as a step-up program, Swiney said.

“We’re going to find out the ‘why’,” Swiney said. “Why they have to come to a food pantry, what is holding them back and what can we do to help them get the resources to become self-sufficient.”

The pandemic has put an enormous burden on families, especially economically. Parents are choosing between paying rent or purchasing groceries. For well over a decade Positive American Youth has been able to provide families with food, beverages and other  staple house hold items.
Thousands Fed in One Day
We are needed now more than ever, as the adverse effects of Covid-19 have devastated the average families ability to provide basic necessities.

Since April we have distributed over 100,400 pounds of food monthly for families in need.  Before the pandemic, and in the midst of it, Positive American Youth has continued to serve our community with much needed resources. Every donation will allow us to continue to get families staple grocery items and house hold goods.

Positive American Youth (PayUsa): mission is to reach our youth through positive and productive events and activities and help build up families by providing resources. Hence our motto: “"People helping people help themselves”."
