Help Howell Rebuild After RV Fire Tragedy

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to hear my grandfathers story. My name is Savannah & I am the oldest grandchild my grandfather has. My grandfathers name is Howell. Let me tell you a little bit about him. He has always been a very loving, sweet & caring person. He is very straight forward with whatever he has to say , & very very outspoken lol. He’s always had a passion for fishing and at one point he loved to ride his motorcycles. He currently lives in Arizona & that’s where he’s been for a little while now. He loves to look for gold and travel around the country and that’s what he’s done pretty much his time while being retired. He loves his family and his dogs that he’s had. Unfortunately on April 22nd my mom received a call from one of my grandfathers neighbors. They stated they heard someone yelling “help me” and when they looked outside the saw my grandfathers RV in flames. My grandfather was able to make it out but his dog slim unfortunately did not. When the paramedics arrived they were told that my grandfather initially went back into the RV to try to save slim (his dog) & was unsuccessful in doing that. He didn’t care that the Rv was engulfed in flames he was determined to save his dog. His Rv had everything he’s ever owned. Clothes, important papers, things possibly way back when my mom was a child herself, even things back to when my grandmother (his late wife) was alive. For as long as I can remember he’s lived in his motor home. Once we received this news, as you may all understand we were all very distraught.. especially my mom as this is her only form of family she has left besides my sister , my father , my daughter and myself. Her father is all she has left. My grandfather has 12% of his body burned & today 4/28 he goes into surgery for skin grafting. That is where they determine how deep the burns have gone and they may have to cut other parts of his skin to place there to allow the new skin to grow. We haven’t been able to speak to my grandfather as he is currently sedated to try to allow his lungs and body to gain some sort of strength. My grandfather is 80 years old so this has had a tremendous impact on his body. His lungs very weak as he was asleep when the fire began and he was breathing in the smoke for god knows how long. We thank god that he’s made some amazing friends that check on him day in and day out, they have lunches , dinners & even spend holidays together & go out with each other when they can. I can honestly say he has such an amazing support system out there & we are so grateful and blessed that he does. It’s very hard that we cannot get to him faster than we would like. Between with work, our own dog that we have at home , my toddler , & our bills we can barely afford the cost of renting a car & or afford plane tickets, gas , hotels. It’s just all very hard for us to just get up and go. UPDATE: 05/16/25

Howell currently is still sedated but to the lowest setting there is. The skin grafting went great and are healing appropriately. He currently does have 2 infections now. 1 being a lung infection and the other one being a blood infection. He is currently on antibiotics & he’s holding up well on those. The doctors say that he has been improving little by little and that he is going in the right direction with things. His kidneys and everything thing else have been working great & they do remind him every day that we are here with him and everyone who he loves and loves him are praying for him and we are here every step of the way.
