Hi my name is Nikko and I am fundraising for my father. My Father was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s and dementia in late 2020. We have done all the tests to see if we could determine what kind of Dementia he had, it has been non conclusive. My father just turned 72 August 14 he has 4 children and 3 grandchildren. I am his oldest daughter and he has been living with me since Nov 2019. My dad has alway been independent and had retired 4 years prior from 23 years on the job. At this point he was still driving and doing his own thing living his life. In December 2019 I suffered a back injury on the job and went off work for 6 months, within that time I realized my dad was not acting right so I took him to the Dr. And after months of testing we found out he had Alzheimer’s. At this point I could not go back to work and had to figure things out. My dad was pre diabetic with high blood pressure and had kidney disease, his kidney’s are stable at 87% so I had to change his whole diet. At the present time he is no longer pre diabetic and no high blood pressure he also lost 40lbs, now at 6’2 205 lbs. I make all his meals from scratch, I try to only use organic products and I make all his ice cream and desserts from scratch with low glycemic sweetener because he has a sweet tooth. At present my father now needs 24hour care he can no longer bathe by himself, he can barely walk, is incontinent and is a fall risk . His decline has been progressive to say the least. My father’s youngest sister has come to help me and I have another friend helping me. This journey has been hard on me because for the first 2 years I was doing it by myself. At the rate he is declining the dr’s and myself believe he only has maybe a year left of his cognitive functions so I will not be going back to work before then. My plan now is to try to give him the best year of his life and chip away at his bucket list. So I want to be able to trade in my CRV and get a van so we don’t have to fly with his wheelchair and the rest of his equipment. I always have to have someone travel with me and him because it’s to much by myself and the cost would be to great. $7000 would pay for the down payment and special seating for my dad so he is comfortable. The other $3000 will help us pay for gas and resort fees and part of the vacation package I recently bought for him so we can visit more family in other parts of the country. My dad loves vintage cars and one of the biggest car collections of Dusenburgs is in Chicago. He has always wanted to go to the hot air balloon festival in New Mexico and Harlem in New York, just to name a few. He has always wanted to go to Africa but I don’t think he would be able to make the trip, so I’m trying to do what I can in the states. I would never wish this disease on anyone it’s like growing in reverse. After working all your life taking care of your family and children and never getting to enjoy your retirement I think is the worst part for me. My dad is the oldest of 7 so he really only had it good for the first 2 years of his life and after that he had to sacrifice his needs to help his family. Married with children by age 24 and here we are. My dad has lived many lives but never just for himself. His first birthday party ever was at age 70 my siblings and myself gave him. So I would like to do this one last thing for him to see as many smiles as I can before he doesn’t remember how wonderful life can be when somebody loves you.
