What if one day, on your way to work, you were put in handcuffs and transported to another state where you were locked in a room? Would you be scared? Confused? Would you call a lawyer right away? Well, it’s the holidays and court won’t be back in session until next year, so most people won’t be in their office either. You don’t get to ask what's going on or confide in legal representation to make sense of things. You have to sit there and wait, even if it’s a mistake. Your family doesn’t get to spend Christmas with you. You won’t get a chance to finish wrapping presents. You won’t get to kiss your significant other on New Year’s Eve.
This is the very real reality for my girlfriend, who is being held in another state’s county jail for a violation she was already punished for in our home state months ago. It’s double jeopardy on a technicality because the system of the interstate compact is extremely flawed. We just got done fighting this battle and now have to do it again. It’s financially and emotionally draining, and the uncertainty is overwhelming.
If anyone would like to help, we would be extremely grateful. Lawyer/Legal fees, communication, commissary, lost wages, and more are adding up quickly. We could really use a hand. Your support would mean the world to us.
