Hi everyone,
Thank you for taking a moment to read this. Reaching out like this is something we could've never imagined, but life has brought some unexpected challenges in the direction of our family. After much time in thought and in prayer, we knew we had to break out of our comfort zone, let go of our pride, and take a chance for our family. We've realized that accepting help, even when it’s hard to ask for it , is sometimes the most honest and courageous thing we can do.
Life has thrown just about every medical curveball one could imagine within the past eighteen months. As many of you in our community know, our amazing mom, Heather Mundo, experienced the scare of a lifetime when an infection in her leg caused the need for an amputation just below the knee in June of 2024. Since then, it has been a constant uphill battle that has involved physical, mental, and financial struggles.
Alongside those struggles, a battle with insurance became its' own issue after Aetna denied her a new and improved prosthetic leg, deeming it "not medically necessary", despite several doctors claiming it to be necessary. In the meantime, she has been in the process of applying for disability, which we have had no luck with.
Fast forward to the end of July, 2025, our stepdad, Chris, was sent into septic shock when an infection arose inside of him and put an abscess on his liver, nearly sending it into failure. After two weeks in the ICU, Chris was discharged and had scheduled a surgery for September 11th to remove his gallbladder. The doctors at Advent Health put him on countless antibiotics to prepare him for the gallbladder removal. Last week, we rushed him to the emergency room once again because of what the doctors called "an extreme allergic reaction" to the antibiotics which ended up sending his kidneys into failure. As one nephrologist said, this was a "bad draw". From there, he has since been discharged and is now home being treated with dialysis and once again several antibiotics.
Due to these bills stacking sky high, our family is in the middle of the hardest challenges we have ever faced. Although Joe and I may just be young adults, we have learned throughout our days that the people that build this community, that we have grown to love, are nothing short of amazing.
If it is on your heart to donate, we want you to know that anything helps, and anything is greatly appreciated. In the case you may not be in the position to give financially, Joe and I believe in the power of a prayer and of our God. Keeping our family in your prayers is already more than we could ever ask.
May God be with each and every single one of you.
Thank you,
Joe and George Scudiero
