Help Hasan & His Family Have a Future

Donation protected
Hasan Al Akraa is an amazing young Syrian man who needs our help. A group of volunteers want to bring Hasan and his family to Canada as refugees. Under Canada's Private Sponsorship program, volunteers are required to raise enough money to support Hasan and his family for their first 12 months in Canada.

WHY SHOULD YOU HELP?

Hasan and his family fled war-torn Syria in 2012 when Hasan was only 12 years old. After arriving in Malaysia, Hasan started working in restaurants to help support the family, but in Malaysia it is illegal for refugees to work. When Hasan was only 14 years old, he was arrested and held in a detention centre.

It was in the detention centre that Hasan started along the path of helping others, a path that he continues to follow to this day. Hasan spoke to the other refugee children in the detention centre and was horrified and saddened by the cruelty that these innocent children had experienced. He made a promise to himself that you would find a way to help refugee children.

After being released from the detention centre, Hasan started volunteering at refugee learning centres. He came to believe that education is the key to changing the world and he encouraged the children he worked with to keep studying. He also became an advocate for the rights of the children and in 2016, at 16 years old, Hasan started his own volunteer organization to provide youth with opportunities to learn, grow and take action within the community.

Since that time, Hasan and his team of volunteers have organized over 200 charity events, have reached out to 14 communities and they have a network of over 500 volunteers, both locally and internationally. In addition, Hasan is completed a Bachelor of Education degree on a scholarship from the University of Nottingham Malaysia. He also works as a Community and Engagement Officer for Asylum Access Malaysia.

Hasan is the third child of five and is the primary breadwinner in the family. Hasan's father is 52 years old and is not able to work due to an injury. Hasan's mother is 45 and is a housewife who sometimes cooks and sells food or provides childcare. His eldest brother works in a baker and his youngest brother works in a restaurant. His older sister is married and lives in China. His youngest brother is 9 years old and he is still in school.

Please help us bring Hasan and his family to Canada where he can continue his mission to help all the children of the world get the education they deserve.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY RAISED?

All funds raised are held in trust in a Canadian bank account with two signatories. Under Immigration Canada regulations, these funds are not allowed to be withdrawn until the arrival of Hasan and his family. If for any reason their application is unsuccessful, the funds will be provided to Hasan and his family to help support them until they can find a permanent resettlement option.
