Harley is only five years old and should be thriving at this age, but recently, everything changed. He suddenly stopped eating and has lost 20 pounds in just three weeks. We took him to a local veterinarian, where he underwent bloodwork, a urine sample, medications, and a thorough examination. The vet tried to look in his mouth and thought she saw a broken tooth, but Harley wouldn’t let anyone near his mouth to be sure. The bloodwork revealed stage 2 kidney disease, and now we’re left with more questions than answers. The vet isn’t sure if Harley’s not eating because of a bad tooth, something stuck in his mouth or throat, or if it’s a symptom of his kidney disease.

The next step is to sedate Harley so the vet can examine his mouth and throat properly, but the cost is overwhelming. The bills from our local vet have already emptied our savings. We’ve made an appointment at Cheat Lake Animal Hospital, which is more affordable, but we still don’t know how much the sedation and any necessary procedures will cost. It could be a tooth extraction, or something else entirely, and we’re worried about what Harley will need for his kidney disease as well.

Harley is the sweetest, most lovable dog you could ever meet. He loves cheese curls, playing with other dogs, and greeting every person he meets with a wagging tail. He’s never growled or bitten anyone—he just wants to cuddle and be close to his family. Harley loves to dig up my flowers, and every night, he curls up on his Daddy’s lap to watch TV. He means the world to us, and it’s heartbreaking to see him not able to enjoy his favorite things.
