Help Guatemalan family with 9 kids start business!

Donation protected
Our paths first crossed with Salvador at the airport. We were traveling to Guatemala, and our flight had been delayed for three hours. He had been waiting since nearly 5:00 am for our arrival. When he picked us up, despite  having to wait several hours and having to get up early in the morning, he had a great attitude and was smiling nonetheless. Since we did not rent a car during our time in Guatemala, Salvador’s van was our main mode of transportation. After driving with him for a while, we learned about how he had nine kids and he was not earning enough money to provide for all their needs. He said that his wife Pati had the idea to sell bread to add to their total income. And that’s how this all started!

Salvador and Pati have an idea to put together a small business making bread. Pati is a talented baker - her mother and father were both cooks at one of Antigua’s premier restaurants and bakeries so she grew up around good cooking.  The bread she specializes in is primarily muffins and delicious sweet breads with flavors that include Apple, Carrot, Orange, and of course Banana, their most popular! However, they can’t afford to buy the primary ingredients in large quantities, (which can make close to 50 bread loaves). A bulk purchase of primary ingredients costs 210 quetzales or 28 dollars per bulk order, which is way out of their budget. On top of that, they would have to pay for the constant drive to get more dough, special nuts and fruits she uses in the bread, as well as the cost of the pans/molds, which would be a total of 1500 quetzales, or 200 dollars. They sell each large bread loaf for 25-30 quetzales (varies on the flavor), and each muffin is sold for 6. They are confident this business will work, because last winter, when they were able to acquire a portion of dough, they successfully sold 50 breads and muffins to neighbors and friends.  They hope to make this a year-round business and also sell through a stand at their local market.

If we are able to raise enough money, the bread business will be successful enough to add another income to the family, which could help them out a lot. But on top of helping start the business, the money you help raise will also go towards their house.  Currently, the whole family sleeps together in the same room, and would love to be able to extend their house. They hope to be able to build a few more rooms, which the kids would love. However, one of Salvador’s and Pati’s biggest dreams is to send their kids to  the University. One of his oldest daughters would love to be a veterinarian and the other would love to be an OB-GYN, they both excel in school. His thirteen year old daughter is  at the top of her class in math, and was invited to participate in a National league competition for math.

When you contribute, your funds could really impact this great family. Thank you for changing this family's life for the better. We are so grateful for your contributions to this great cause - your investment in their future is heartfelt.

Thank You,
Luli and Lucas
