Legal Defense Fund for the Belfast Eight

Last week, (5/13-14/21), eight individuals from Belfast and a couple neighboring towns were served notice that they were collectively being sued for defamation by the owners of the James P. White House, a Greek Revival mansion in Belfast that is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Details can be found in the link below.

The complainants seek "judgement in their favor against all defendants in an amount sufficient to compensate them for their damages", additionally for their "mental anguish" and "emotional distress" as well as punitive damages.

While we may not, on the advice of our recently retained lawyer, say much more than that, we can and do declare that the eight of us together unanimously and vigorously refute these charges and maintain that the evidence included in the notification of charges can be nothing other than falsified material.  None of us ever said or wrote any of the things depicted in the packet we were served.
The packet is public information so it would be okay to ask any one of us for a copy if you wish to see more.

But we now have to prove that. None of us are of great means and a few are hard-pressed to even produce the needed funds for the lawyer's retainment and associated costs like researching our internet histories. We are each contributing as much as we are able to this surprise expense but we are left with little choice but to turn to our communities and ask whether you'd be willing to help see us through these first steps. We would use the funds for the lawyer's fees and any court fees and other expenses associated with his work.
All we can offer in return is our heartfelt thanks.

Thank you,

Anne Saggese, Allison Ames Goscinski, Joshua Ard,  Erik Klausmeyer,  Mandy Marriner-Everett, Mike Hurley, Cheryl Fuller and Neal Harkness
