Gretchen Ashbeck, an art teacher at Walter Johnson Academy of International Studies, recently experienced a devastating tragedy. On July 7, 2026, Gretchen’s home caught fire, resulting in second and third-degree burns to her face and arms. She is currently receiving outpatient treatment for her injuries. The fire not only destroyed all of Gretchen’s belongings but also took the life of her beloved dog. Currently, Gretchen and her two children are living out of a motel. Because her ID, cards, and payment methods were lost in the blaze, even basic daily transactions are an immense challenge.

As a colleague and friend, we have witnessed firsthand how much Gretchen means to her students and the school community. She is a caring teacher, always encouraging creativity and kindness in her classroom. Gretchen has a son and daughter who are also affected by this sudden loss. Now, she needs our support to get back on her feet. Every dollar raised will go directly toward immediate emergency needs: food, temporary lodging costs, clothing, and essential toilet items; fees and support needed to replace critical IDs and documents; and rehousing costs such as security deposits, furniture, kitchen essentials, and bedding for a new permanent home.
