Fire Trailers and Road Safety Campaign

During Christmas week 2020 in Gregory Town, Eleuthera, Bahamas, a house burned to the ground at 3:00 am. The fire consumed the entire home. By the grace of God, the fire stopped there. Had the night been windy, the fire most likely would’ve devastated central Gregory Town.

The Christmas fire was a sobering reminder of the importance of fire prevention and firefighting readiness. The shocking truth is that Gregory Town and surrounding communities have been without a fire truck or any firefighting apparatus for years. 

Gregory Town Ray of Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to making Gregory Town and its surrounding areas safer. Thanks to our generous donors, we have built 6 Fire Trailers to fight fires in Gregory Town and surrounding areas.

Road Safety and Beautification Campaign

Our newest project is an extension of our Fire Safety campaign and aims to keep pedestrians, cyclists and cars safe by creating shoulders on Queen’s Highway. This initiative also involves roadside clean-up and beautification.

One of our donors, Eric Ohlwiler, generously donated a Deutz DX110A Tractor/bush hog, which will be used to create safety lanes on Queen’s Highway. In order to properly create and maintain these lanes, litter will have to be picked up regularly so that the tractor can do its job without compromising the equipment. An “Adopt-A-Spot” Campaign is underway, with volunteers adopting a section of Queen’s Highway, keeping it clear of litter and enhancing their spot with coconut palms and native plants. Regular roadside maintenance will also reduce fire-fueling underbrush, protecting the community from dangerous brush fires. This new safety campaign protects travelers, enhances the environment, bolsters community pride and positively impacts tourism.
