On Tuesday morning, June 30, I was still waking up when I heard my goat Bertie screaming outside. Bertie is our tripod goat, and I immediately ran outside to find a white husky mix attacking her only hind leg. She was bleeding and in distress. I chased the dog off the property and called animal control, the vet, and my daughter to help me load Bertie for the hour-long drive to our vet. We then discovered that Butter, our most recent rescue and smallest resident, had also been attacked. She was bleeding from her back and hindquarters and was in shock.

Vet bills are mounting, and neither goat can walk—especially Bertie, who cannot stand now because of the injury to her only hind leg. We need specialized care for Bertie, and both goats will be on extended stall rest. With temperatures over 100 degrees, we need to find a solution for keeping them safe and comfortable, as the barns are too hot during the day. I have a contractor coming to assess what can be done for the barns, and my vet said they could refer us to NC State vet hospital. I have purchased several wheelchairs to see if any will work for Bertie, as well as portable kennels with shade.

Any donation will help offset the costs already incurred and support upcoming vet visits, specialist referrals, and possible surgery for Bertie, whose knee may have been injured in the attack. The vet suspects torn ligaments, and advanced imaging is needed to confirm. Your support will help us give Butter and Bertie the best chance at a full recovery after this brutal dog attack. They're both so loved and have already been through a lot in their short lives. Butter is a rescue we adopted from Red Dog Farm sanctuary, and Bertie was adopted back in 2020 with her mother Lumos, who is also so worried about her kid.
