My name is Glenn Bryant, and I’m a recent graduate of Rutgers University–Newark, preparing to begin my career as a high school English teacher with the Jersey City Board of Education. This past year has been incredibly difficult. In December, I lost my job and the housing that came with it. My car was impounded when I could no longer afford insurance. While finishing my final semester at Rutgers, I lived in university housing, but that ended with the summer term. Although I was accepted into the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, I was told there was no graduate housing available. I’ve applied to multiple housing assistance programs and joined waiting lists, but no options have opened up.
Currently, I am undomiciled and staying temporarily with a friend, but I only have 21 days left before I need to find permanent housing. My friend’s home is not accessible by public transportation, and I have no carpool or biking options. Commuting to work is a significant challenge, quickly depleting my limited resources. I am working daily to secure a permanent home, but I need help to get over this immediate hurdle.
Teaching is more than a job for me—it’s a calling. I am driven to serve the students of Jersey City with passion and empathy, honoring the legacy of my late wife, who was a lifelong educator. Every time I step into a classroom, I carry her memory with me, striving to give my students the same hope and opportunity she gave to so many. I am asking for support to cover the costs of securing stable housing, transportation to work, and basic living expenses until my first paycheck arrives. Your help will allow me to focus on my students and my new role, knowing I have a safe place to live and a way to get to work.
