Hi, my name is Alamarie and I’m reaching out to ask for your help for my beautiful 16-year-old son, Cooper.

Cooper was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) on his third birthday—an incurable, progressive muscle-wasting condition that slowly takes away a child’s ability to walk, move, and eventually even breathe on their own. As of now, Cooper is wheelchair-bound, having already lost the ability to walk.

Despite the daily challenges he faces, Cooper continues to live with courage, humour, and hope. But with DMD comes a very real need: independence and access to life’s everyday moments—doctor appointments, visits with friends, school, and simply enjoying the world beyond our home.

While we are incredibly grateful for the support we receive through government funding—which helps with the adaptation of vehicles for accessibility—it does not cover the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible car. Unfortunately, the vehicle must be nearly new in order to ensure it lasts throughout Cooper’s shortened life expectancy. This is a heartbreaking and significant financial burden we simply cannot manage alone.

In time, I know I will also need to step away from full-time work to become Cooper’s full-time carer. That’s why we’re turning to our community with this fundraiser—to help give Cooper the gift of mobility, dignity, and freedom.
