Gislaine is a strong, resilient woman who has spent her entire life working hard to create a better future for herself and her family. Born into a humble family, she always believed that education was the key to changing her life. Through determination and countless sacrifices, she earned a place in medical school—one of the most competitive programs in Brazil. Unfortunately, financial hardship forced her to make an incredibly difficult decision. In order to help support her family, she had to give up her dream of becoming a doctor. Refusing to give up on her future, she pursued a law degree instead, allowing her to work during the day and attend classes at night. Her dedication paid off. She was accepted into a federal university, graduated with a law degree, and successfully passed the Brazilian Bar Exam.
While conducting research for her final graduation project, Gislaine met the man who would later become her husband. Having taught herself English, she was able to communicate with him and build a relationship despite the distance. He traveled to Brazil, they got married, and together they built a family and welcomed children into their lives. After four years of marriage, they decided to move to the United States in search of new opportunities. Gislaine left behind her career, her support system, her friends, and everything she had built in Brazil to start over in a new country with her family.
Unfortunately, the life she envisioned did not become reality. While pregnant with her third child, Gislaine began to witness a side of her husband she had never seen before. His behavior changed dramatically. Harmful habits emerged, and he made inappropriate and unacceptable demands that left her shocked and heartbroken. Faced with these circumstances, Gislaine made the courageous decision to file for divorce. His response was devastating. In an act of rage, he destroyed nearly everything inside their home. Furniture, personal belongings, and even the children's toys were smashed, including the bicycle of their 4-year-old daughter and her beloved dolls. This traumatic event happened in front of the children and in front of Gislaine while she was pregnant. The emotional trauma has been especially difficult for her young daughter. She has since been receiving therapy and has been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), requiring ongoing emotional support and professional care as she works through the fear and trauma she experienced. With nowhere else to turn, Gislaine sought refuge in a shelter for women and children. Today, she lives with her three children in government-assisted housing. She faces daily financial struggles, limited resources, and an uncertain future. Gislaine cannot return to Brazil because ongoing custody matters prevent her from leaving the United States with her children without their father's permission. She is also unable to fully support herself through employment at this time because her immigration and work authorization documents are still being processed.
At this time, the children’s father is not providing financial support for the children. He has stated that he is unable to work due to health issues. Adding to the challenges, the children’s father has since relocated to Florida. Despite everything she has endured, Gislaine has not given up. She is determined to rebuild her life and create a stable future for her children. Her goal is to complete a Paralegal certification program, which would allow her to enter the workforce more quickly and achieve financial independence while providing for her three children, including her newborn daughter. Today, Gislaine needs our help to take that next step.
