My name is Giselle Escalante. I am a survivor of Domestic Violence who has worked in DV/Unhoused services for the last three years in Sacramento. I have devoted myself to helping others achieve safety & security, & I am now asking for help for my own. In February 13th of this year, one of my worst fears as a femme living alone was actualized: my apartment was broken into by an individual I was briefly dating. I was inside my home during the invasion & was able to defend myself while sustaining only minor bruises that night but the effects on my mental health & overall stability have been hugely impactful. I received no support from law enforcement despite having called 911 that night, providing both photos & footage of the incident. Police detained me & I had to bond out despite being legally cleared of any wrong-doing for defending myself in my home. I have been unable to return to work for several months since due to the physical effects of the stress & fear in addition to the lengthy legal process. I was able to pay off back-rent but I have been facing upcoming bills as I get back on my feet again after winning the court case. I am asking for assistance with June's rent, as well as any help towards legal fees that went towards protecting myself in court. Any further support will go to emergency protection & planning, such as additional security cameras. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
