It's an exciting time for Wallowa County, Oregon's 2SLGBTQIA+ community! After 7+ years of rural queer support through Safe Harbors, our community has come together to start our own volunteer-run 2SLGBTQIA+ support nonprofit, named People Like Us.
People Like Us is a 501(c)3 organization by us, for us. We are a strong team of rural queer advocates, organizers, and youth from Wallowa County with diverse lived experiences, including two of the three people who have served our rural queer community as the 2SLGBTQIA+ advocate at Safe Harbors over the course of the past 7 years. We know what is needed for our rural queer community and have the heart, experience, and wisdom to grow community support, joy, and resilience so that "people like us" can thrive here, too.
Our immediate needs & dreams include:
- Providing meals, snacks, and supplies for our weekly Queer Youth Program
- Food & supplies for regular (monthly/bi-monthly) community-building events throughout the year to combat rural queer isolation
- Funds for community members in need to purchase gender affirming items such as binders, packers, makeup, clothes, etc. and for name changes and travel to appointments that are not available locally
- Community outreach (flyers, website, etc.)
We want to work towards making sure that every single 2SLGBTQIA+ community member here is loved and supported in all the ways that they need. If you want to support rural queer wellness, resilience, and joy, this is a very important time in the national landscape and our organization is great opportunity to do so! Please lend your support to help get People Like Us off the ground and share with your friends!
