CLARE’S ENDURANCE LIFE CLASSIC QUARTER RUN FOR JAKE!
Everyone loves a beach day with the kids, a walk through woodland with the family, or a picnic in the park with friends and loved ones. It’s a human right to be able to get outside and enjoy nature. So, imagine how frustrated you would be if you had to wrestle, fight and force a clunky, heavy wheelchair across a bumpy field, dig the wheels out of the sand every couple of metres, or push and pull your child’s wheelchair over stones, rocks and tree roots JUST to be able to access the great outdoors.
This summer families all over the country will head for some much-needed fun in the countryside and at the coast. But for some families, accessing those simple pleasures is an almost impossible task. A fun day out becomes a tiring and overwhelming test of physical strength and injury risk.
This is Clare and Gary’s son, Jake. Like most boys his age, Jake loves Harry Potter, steam trains and playing on the beach. Jake also happens to have Down Syndrome as well as Cerebral Palsy and other complex needs which make it challenging for him to walk for long periods of time and over uneven terrain, and so he often needs to use a wheelchair.
Jake loves to be outside with his little brother Nate, but he’s growing up fast and his current wheelchair is unsuitable for use off road. The bigger and heavier Jake gets, the harder it is for Clare and Gary to manoeuvre his wheelchair and take him to do the things that all families love to do together.
The NHS do not fund off road wheelchairs, which means the expense of upgrading to a more suitable off road wheelchair that will support Jake as he grows and enable him to continue to enjoy fun times with his family, must be met by Clare and Gary.
The STARTING PRICE for a standard off road wheelchair is £4,195. That’s without any adaptations to ensure it is suitable for Jake’s needs as well as his height and weight.
As you can imagine, that’s a hefty expense for any family to cover. Living in Cornwall, an off road wheelchair is not a luxury. It’s a necessity.
That is why, Clare has decided to run a 24 mile stretch of the Classic Quarter ultra marathon on 22nd May to raise money for a new off road wheelchair for Jake. It’s a tough run over undulating coastal path, starting from Lizard Point in Helston and running to Marazion. Once there, she will hand over to her relay partner Paul Lampier, of Lampier’s Butchers in Threemilestone, who will finish the course at Land’s End. Between them, they will cover more than 44 miles and over 1500m of rugged coastal elevation.
A physically challenging task for sure. But so is pushing a standard wheelchair across anything other than flat ground.
Your donations will make it possible for Clare and her family to be able to help Jake explore the coast or countryside just like every other family this summer, and for many more years to come.
Clare’s fundraising target is £5,000 – this is to allow for the starting price of the wheelchair and hopefully to cover some of the additional costs of wheelchair modifications.

If you’re able to support her, all donations would be so gratefully received. Jake loves exploring so if you can help Clare hit her fundraising goal, you’ll have made him a very happy boy.
Thank you Clare & family xxxx
