Omar Abboud, 37, arrived in Texas last November after fleeing religious persecution in Iran and spending more than six years languishing on Manus Island.
After finally gaining his freedom and beginning to rebuild his life, Omar is now struggling to cover essential costs as COVID-19 ravages America's economy.
This fundraiser is to help Omar to get his commercial trucking license so he can get a reliable, in-demand, well-paid job as a truck driver – as dozens of former Manus and Nauru refugees have also done.
Please chip in to help cover the training costs and put Omar on the road to a new life >>
**All donations processed in USD**
Within a month of Omar's arrival he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and treated with medications that made him fatigued. In May, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and was flattened for over six weeks
Today Omar is has recovered, and is determined to make a new start. He loves driving and knows that America’s open roads will not only earn him a living, but help him to regain confidence and independence.
Omar has already applied to a driving school and paid an initial deposit. Now all he needs is our help to get the final funds together and start down the road to a new life.
Truck driving has been a path to self-sufficiency for dozens of Manus and Nauru refugees, but professional CDL license training costs can be a stumbling block. Please chip in now to help Omar reach his goal >>
The Aussie-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this GoFundMe on behalf of Omar. Funds go to a registered charity account and will pay directly for training costs. Any surplus donations will be used to fund CDL costs for other Manus and Nauru refugees.
Please chip in to give Omar a fresh start >>
