I am asking for help because my home is no longer safe, and I am trying to recover from cancer treatment and major surgery at the same time. The repairs I needed were not covered by insurance.
While I was still trying to deal with the home repairs, I discovered that the estate paperwork after my mother passed from COVID in 2020 had not been completed correctly. Even though I was listed on the deed, that created a separate issue with the mortgage, and the mortgage company required me to make a large payment to resolve it. That drained the money I needed for repairs.
Raccoons also got into the roof and caused more damage. I paid for their removal, patching the holes they made, and closing off their entry points, but the larger roof damage still needed repair. Two large oak trees are also damaging the roof and need to be removed.
After a recent storm, the temporary fixes were no longer enough. Water started coming through the damaged roof, and part of the ceiling collapsed in my bedroom. There is now an active leak, ceiling damage, and a dangerous hole in the roof above the only bedroom I can realistically use while recovering. I had to turn off the power in that room because the leak is close to a ceiling fan and light. I also need to keep my dog, Kona, safely away from the damaged area.
At the same time, I am facing a serious medical situation. In March, doctors found a large mass in my uterus. I had a full abdominal hysterectomy on April 20, and on May 12, I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. I am scheduled for a second surgery on June 17. I am also a prior cancer survivor and live with multiple sclerosis. I normally work full-time, but I am currently on unpaid medical leave and have been unable to earn income during treatment, surgery, and recovery.
I am scared of trying to recover from surgery in a home with an active roof leak, ceiling collapse, and no safe bedroom to rest in. I would not ask for help unless I truly needed it. Funds raised will go toward professional emergency roof tarping, roof repair or replacement, water damage mitigation, ceiling repair, removal of the two oak trees, any required permitting or arborist documentation, inspection or professional cleanup related to the collapsed ceiling, and making the home safe enough for me to recover after surgery. If temporary lodging becomes necessary, funds may also be used for a safe place to stay while emergency repairs are completed. I have prior estimates and will post updates, invoices, and progress as repairs happen. Any amount helps, and sharing this fundraiser helps too.
Thank you for helping me get through this and make my home safe again so I can focus on healing.
