In an instant, my parents lost the home they’ve lived in for over 50 years when a massive red oak tree came crashing through the roof on August 17th in Bridgeton, MO. It destroyed much of the roof, trusses, family room, and kitchen, leaving their house unlivable.
We are so thankful that my parents, Gary (79) and Kathy (82), weren’t hurt. But at their age, being suddenly displaced for what will likely be 3–5 months has turned their lives upside down. For now, they are staying in a hotel while searching for a more suitable temporary place to stay until repairs are complete.
My mom has lived with limited mobility since a stroke in 1999, and in the past few years has relied on a wheelchair more and more. Even simple daily routines become overwhelming without the stability and accessibility of home. Living in temporary spaces has been incredibly stressful for both of them. On top of that, they live on a fixed income, which makes the unexpected costs of displacement especially difficult to manage.
Insurance is handling the major repairs, but there are still many uncovered expenses adding up, including:
- Daily meals out for several months with no kitchen to cook in (all of their food spoiled after the power outage)
- Temporary housing needs, including accessibility accommodations
- Out-of-pocket costs from emergency tree removal
- Countless small expenses that come with being suddenly uprooted at their age
My parents are proud people who would never ask for help themselves. Over the past few days, many friends and family have reached out asking how they can support them. This GoFundMe is simply a way to make that easier.
Any help will go directly toward easing the unexpected day-to-day costs of being displaced. We’re deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness so many of you have already shown.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
