Gary and Karen Kuffer, lifelong Janesville residents, were evicted from their family home on February 21st 2026, due to their brother Wayne's nursing home selling the home to support his care. They are now homeless, and staying at a motel funded by donations from friends. They are eligible for the housing offered by ECHO, but there is a one to two year waiting list. The House of Mercy and the GIFTS shelters also have waiting lists. This is a sad occurrence for a brother and sister who have worked hard all their lives and who have made do with what they've had, living their lives, never asking for anything or taking food stamps or many of the services they were entitled to. Doing odd jobs, mowing lawns, or hauling trash is too hard for them to do now as they are in their mid 70s. Gary does still collect aluminum cans and he does get money from them every week. They have $1555.00 collectively a month from Social Security. The ADRC and HealthNet are now helping them with the services they deserve so badly, due to income. However, housing is the remaining issue. The motel stay cannot continue much longer as the fee is $375 per week and this is being covered by donations from friends. It is urgent that they get housing or they could be living in their car. Enough money needs to be raised for an apartment plus utilities. They deserve to live out their lives in a decent place to live. This has been a very stressful time for Gary and Karen and any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated and be put toward them getting housing. Thank you so very much
