Help Gabriel Fight Injustice
Treated Like a Criminal. Held as a Hostage.
Accused of Stealing $2.88 Potato Chips — Charges Dismissed, Yet Still Detained
Why We Need Help
My husband, Gabriel, was falsely accused of stealing potato chips worth $2.88. The charges were quickly dismissed because the story was fabricated by an angry woman. Still, this baseless accusation has cost him his freedom.
Since August 30, 2025, Gabriel has been trapped in a nightmare:
He was held in 3 different jails in just one week before being handed over to ICE.
ICE then moved him through 3 detention centers in only 4 days.
He has been treated like a criminal and held as a hostage in a system that refuses to see his humanity.
Today, Gabriel is being held at Glades Detention Center in Florida — a facility so notorious that President Biden once shut it down. It is not a place anyone would want their loved one.
Detainees often wait days to receive urgent medication.
During transport in the Florida heat, Gabriel went 12 hours with nothing but water.
He continues to endure treatment no innocent person should ever face.
The Bigger Picture
Gabriel’s case shows how broken our immigration system has become.
Under the Laken Riley Act (2025), even when someone has committed no crime, a false accusation can lead to ICE detention. It doesn’t matter if someone’s immigration status is in process or if they are married to an American citizen — they can still be torn from their family overnight.
Congress has stepped in. Lawmakers are outraged that Gabriel’s I-130 petition sat in pending status for nearly 10 years. This petition must be approved for him to move forward, and Congress is pressing immigration to act.
They are also working to bring national attention to his case, because too many families are living this same nightmare.
Immigration must be held accountable: petitions cannot sit unresolved for a decade, and families cannot be forced through 10+ rescheduled court hearings with no end in sight. There must be deadlines. There must be justice.
For anyone who believes detention centers hold only criminals, Gabriel’s story proves otherwise. He is a husband, a hardworking man, and someone who came here legally. Yet he is being treated like a criminal and held as a hostage in a system that punishes the innocent.
The Costs We Face
To fight this injustice, we urgently need to hire an experienced immigration attorney and cover mounting legal costs. Here’s what we are facing:
Attorney retainer fee: $9,000 just to begin representation
Court and filing costs: $2,000+
Possible civil legal action against the employee: $5,000–$10,000
Travel and living expenses while managing this crisis
Together, these costs can easily reach $15,000–$20,000. For me alone, this is overwhelming. Without help, Gabriel’s case cannot be properly fought — and his freedom, as well as our family’s future, remain at serious risk.
