Help fund toilets in rural South Africa
Around the globe 500’000 children die every year due to inadequate sanitation. Many of these children live in areas where public infrastructure, such as municipal water, electricity and transport is either unreliable or non-existent.
Our names are Birger, Niklas and Roger. We are three ambitious dreamers who have set out to solve some of these complex, urgent and interlinked issues in a small rural community in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
In September 2020, we sourced, funded and installed 3 semi-dry toilets at a Montessori school in Coffee Bay. Where previously two pit latrines stood full, our solution now supplies safe, water-wise and environmentally sustainable toilets to the 80 children at this school. These toilets have made a tangible and significant change to the dignity of these children. We are extremely proud to have been part of the solution!
Dawn Brochenin , Project Leader of Ncinci Ones Montessori Association , said:
"Your generosity, support and assistance has been amazing…The children and adults are over the moon with joy! These toilets are enabling the children and staff to have a dignified, safe and healthy toilet experience, which is unheard of in our area. "

We now need your help to fund the installation of 12 more semi-dry toilets in 4 other Montessori schools in the area serving approximately 400 children (and of course their carers and teachers).
Would you like to contribute to changing children's lives in some of the poorest communities in South Africa?
If you've ever been to Africa, you'll know that despite poverty, you'll always get a warm smile. Imagine if that smile could be because of the simple fact that there is a proper toilet at school?
Ncinci Ones Montessori School in Coffee Bay, South Africa
Cost breakdown per school :
1 x complete building including :
- walls,
- roof,
- floor,
- lockable doors,
- paint
- windows
- 3 x wash basins,
- 2 x urinals,
- 3 x semi-dry toilets
- plumbing
- electricity
110 000 kr
Total cost for 4 schools (approximately 400 children) : 440 000kr
This means an investment of 1100 kr per child for the duration of their schooling.
Technical:
The toilets are urine separating semi-dry toilets that can flush the front urin bowl. This, together with a small fan in the box, allows for the faeces to dry. The toilet is completely odourless.
Our ultimate vision is to create work opportunities in these communities via a service organisation that has the responsibility of replacing toilet paper and soap as well as cleaning and taking care of the dry waste set for use in fertiliser.
Pit latrines at Ncinci Ones Montessori School
Almost complete toilet building at Ncinci Ones Montessori School, Oct 2020
Ventilated boxes for faeces waiting to convert waste to resource (fertlilizer) - part of the circular economy idea we are working on in the second phase.
"A toilet is not just a toilet. It’s a life-saver, dignity-protector and opportunity-maker. Whoever you are, wherever you are, sanitation is your human right. "
All donations will be gratefully accepted.
