I'm starting this on behalf of my mom. Since 2014, she has sewn and donated 404 pillowcases to the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, WI. The last 3 years have been difficult due to spouse health issues, and she has not been able to sew. Recently, she has started to sew again and was in a local fabric store the other day. The owner recognized her and asked if she would be interested in starting to donate pillowcases again to the children, as they currently do not have any themed pillowcases for the kids.
My understanding is that when a child is admitted, they are offered a choice of pillowcases to use and keep during their stay. When the child leaves the hospital, the pillowcase is theirs to keep. If the child does not leave the hospital, the pillowcase is offered to their parents as a gift. This may seem insignificant, but the fact that these pillowcases are donated and made with love is pretty special.
When talking to her, she mentioned the price of fabric has gotten too expensive for her to donate the amount of pillowcases she would like to. Since speaking with the fabric store owner, she has completed three Valentine-themed pillowcases. Currently, a pillowcase needs 1.25 yards of fabric at a cost of $13-14 a yard, or about $17 a pillowcase. My Mom has the time, ability, and once again brings her enjoyment, to make these pillowcases out of love and donate to a very worthy cause.
We are fundraising to help cover the cost of fabric so she can continue to make and donate these pillowcases. The children at the American Family Children's Hospital will benefit from these lovingly made pillowcases, bringing them a bit of comfort during their stay.
