Justice Action is a voluntary run community-based organisation of criminal justice and mental-health activists targeting the abuse of authority.
Justice Action (JA) gives a voice to the marginalized and excluded, including the family of David Dungay Jnr. JA believes that for positive changes to Australia’s criminal justice and mental health systems to be achieved, these voices must be respected and embraced.
JA comprises prisoners, victims, families, students, lawyers, judges, members of parliament, the media, and others who contribute their skills, knowledge, and talents to support and redress the injustices of our judicial system.
JA has funded its independence through the social enterprise Breakout Media Communications. In light of the declining print industry, however, JA is struggling to maintain its operation. To enable us to continue and expand, including employing our first paid member of staff, JA seeks your kind donations.
JA’s past achievements include:
-Defending the right of prisoners to vote in the Senate in 1997 and again in 2006.
-Facilitating the creation of the Australian Prisoners Union in 1999.
-Working with Women Behind Bars to successfully change the law on provocation in domestic violence murder cases, around the Bruce and Violet Roberts Blockade.
-Defending the rights of children to maintain their all-day weekend visits to their mothers at the Emu Plains Correctional Centre.
-Distributing Just Us, a newspaper for detainees in all prisons in all states and territories. The only newspaper publication that is available for prisoners.
(Please see our website for further information, including our current work: https://www.justiceaction.org.au/ )
The movement to provide a voice for prisoners dates back to when Australia was a penal colony. The movement arose in response to the inhumane slavery and degradation of convicts at that time. Please help JA continue this spirit and tradition of representing victims of injustice and power abuse by kindly donating.
Many thanks from all at Justice Action.
