Help Fund Drag artists preforming at the protest
Donation protected
What happened?:
Recently, the leadership of UNT made a decision to ban any “drag” or “drag-related” performances on campus. This leadership including but not limited to: Board of Regents Chairman Kevin P. Eltife, and System Chancellor Michael Williams. This decision is incredibly similar to the one which was ruled unconstitutional by District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal. Drag performance is protected by the first amendment right to freedom of expression, letting the government limit our freedom of expression sets a dangerous precedent.
What are we doing?:
Our organization, the Young Democratic Socialists of America, have organized an email campaign to reach out to UNT leadership directly and push for a removal of this ban, as well as a protest. At times like these, resistance and celebration go hand in hand, because every day queer people continue surviving is both. We’ve organized a protest for this Wednesday 04/23/25 at 1:00, which will involve marching, speeches, and drag performances.
Why we need support:
We’re incredibly grateful for the performer’s generosity and flexibility in scheduling last minute performances. But while they love their art, many artists can’t afford the amount of time and work it takes to do it for free. As well as the physical and social risk performing at a protest involves. Unfortunately, our student organization doesn’t have the funds to pay all of these performer’s what they deserve, so we’re reaching out to our community. If you’re unable to make it to the protest, but still want to support the important art and activism that these performers are doing, please consider making a donation online.
