I am seeking help here in order to fund the Slackware UK web hosting servers, so that I may provide uninterrupted service to the Open Source, Slackware Linux community whom have come to rely on the project.
Currently, the server which provides the web hosting and mirror service costs £1500 per year to fund. For the past 10+ years, the server has been generously supported by a company; however, due to the pandemic causing issues to their operation, they may no longer be able to sponsor the project for the coming years.
I am hoping to raise funds in order to keep the web hosting service operational, uninterrupted, for the next 3 years; and I hope that you would like to lend support to this goal - any and all donations will be gratefully received, and every little bit helps to keep this worthwhile project operational.
Please note that I do not earn a wage or take any sort of remuneration from the service I provide - all donations are used for the sole purpose of paying expenses incurred by the project.
Some detailed information on the Open Source philosophy, Slackware Linux and Slackware UK follows - you may wish to read further to understand the ethos of the community.
What is Open Source?
The concepts of Open Source, both software and community are best explained by this article on the opensource.com website.
It is well worth a read to understand our community.
However, a short synopsis: Open Source is a philosophy and covenant to support values of freedom and community support within the computer software eco-sphere. Open Source software is free to use, copy and modify as the end user wishes, without restrictions or commercial license agreements.
What is Slackware Linux?
Slackware Linux is an Open Source operating system you can install on your computer for free, which is unencumbered by restrictions on usage, modification or redistribution. It is an alternative to the Windows operating system, with a focus on stability, security and a wide set of free software preinstalled.
What is Slackware UK?
The Slackware UK web hosting and mirror service has been running for nearly 20 years now and started out small. From simply offering users access to copies of the Slackware Linux distribution, the service has grown and grown into what it is today - dedicated servers hosting all things Slackware!
I would like to think Slackware UK has grown to be one of the largest repositories of Slackware Linux related projects and files on the Internet - in fact, I cannot think of anywhere else that provides access to so many resources in one location.
If you wish to provide support on a regular basis towards the ongoing fees and expenses of running the project, I also have a Patreon page where you can sign-up for monthly donations.
Thank you for any support you choose to offer :)
