Help For Turkey Syria Earthquake Appeal
Proceeds go directly to the British Red Cross that are providing aid in Turkey & Syria
On February 6, 2023, a dark day dawned in Turkey and Syria. Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.5 struck central Turkey also affecting nearby Syria. The quakes were among the deadliest in Turkey's history and impacted neighbouring countries and cities with a population of 15 million people.
Snowy winter exacerbates the humanitarian disaster, as many affected regions are yet unattended by rescue teams. Turkey declared a Level-4 emergency alert that includes a general call for international support. According to the initial reports from the region, more than 11,000 people have lost their lives, many are still under the rubble, and thousands are left homeless in cold weather conditions or cannot enter their homes. Despite the incremental weather, search and rescue teams continue their work in the region. Concern grows deeper that the weight of the destruction is more serious than we can currently see.
The earthquake's toll continues to rise, with thousands affected, particularly in the region where it struck, including Hatay, Maraş, Antep, Diyarbakır, Malatya, Osmaniye, Adana, Adıyaman, and Urfa. The harsh winter weather compounds the humanitarian disaster as aid has yet to reach many impacted areas. Turkey has declared a Level-4 emergency alert and has issued a general call for international support. Despite the challenging conditions, search and rescue teams are still working in the area. There are growing concerns that the extent of the destruction may be even worse than currently realised.
The Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) has launched a crisis response operation and mobilised teams in more than 10 regions across the country, while the Syrian Arab Red Crescent is delivering assistance and support to those in need in the regions of Hama, Aleppo and Lattakia.
