Christopher Mamby :Help for St. Ann's Bay Hospital
Donation protected
My name is Christopher Mamby and I traveled to Jamaica in July of 2020. On the 12th of August, I was in a motor vehicle accident in St Ann's, Jamaica. I was immediately transported to the emergency at St. Ann’s Bay Hospital for assessment. After countless X-rays and a CT- Scan, the doctor told me that, my jaw was broken on the left side of my face and I had four fractured ribs on my right side. I was very lucky to be alive.
I spent 6 days in the hospital; two days in the emergency department and 4 days in the Men Surgical Ward at St. Ann's Bay Hospital. The days that I spent in the hospital were uncomfortable, noisy, and the lights were so bright, I was not able to sleep at all. The day started at 3:00 a.m which is shower time and ended at 6:00 p.m which is supper time. I was so happy to get out of the hospital. I returned to the hospital on the 31st of August for a follow-up and thanks to the efficient and attentive doctors, they discovered that I had fluid in my right lung. I was readmitted right away as this situation was very serious. They performed a small operation to insert a tube to drain the fluid from my lung. The operation was a success and I was discharged on the 3rd of September and I was in high spirits. I wanted to sleep in a comfortable bed without the noise and the bright lights. At my follow up visit on the 9th of September, I was given the green light that my ribs and lungs are healing and time would tell.
As for my jaw, it is still wired and I continue to drink only liquids. I have lost 30 pounds during this ordeal. I have since returned to Canada and is quarantined at my home.
Here are the reasons why I would like to help the St. Ann's Bay Hospital
The first night of my hospitalization, I was shivering and feeling cold and I asked the nurse if I could have a second sheet or a blanket and was told neither was available. There was only one sheet available per bed and the hospital consists of approximately 500 beds. The hospital comprised of an emergency; COVID 19 ward; men and women surgical wards; maternity and neo-natal wards. I was shocked and in disbelief. Yes, it was a harsh reality, there I was just cold and shivering and there were others with more serious illnesses and injuries with greater need for that extra sheet or blanket to have a bit of comfort and there was none to given. I was told that each patient must provide his or her own blanket and pillow should they require one. I had to somehow try to think of something else other than me being cold. I felt alone and isolated because it was during the COVID-19 pandemic and the hospital only allowed one visitor for one hour per day from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, so I had to do without.
I then decided that when I returned to Canada I would try to source and acquire sheets, pillows and blankets for the St. Ann's Bay Hospital. I would to express my gratitude to the doctors, nurses and orderly who provided me with excellent care and I am very grateful that they took really good care of me.
My Goal is to raise $25 000 Canadian.
Your donation will be used for the following:
- To purchase linen for each beds: 1 flat and 1 fitted sheet and a pillow case
- To purchase blankets and privacy curtains
- To equip each area separated by a curtain with vital personal care devices: urinals, bedpans
- To equip the reception area with a computer, a phone and a fax machine
My health will improve, and I would like the lives of the patients to be improved during their stay at the St. Ann's Bay Hospital. I am asking everyone who has ever been hospitalized, been ill or visited our beautiful island of Jamaica or aspire to visit, to please think about the community who depends on this hospital. One never knows where you will end up after an accident, mishap or acts of nature.
Any amount of a donation would be greatly appreciated.
Please share my story about the St. Ann's Bay Hospital.
Thank you.
**To the Jamaican Diaspora, whether you are from the St. Ann area or the surrounding parishes, some of you may have an idea of the hospital situation, so I am counting on you for your support, by donating to this cause and spreading the word.
