Help for Sam after a tragic balcony fall in Ayia Napa

I’m raising funds to support Sam, who has sustained serious injuries while in Ayia Napa after a tragic fall from a third-floor hotel balcony. Despite our encouragement for him to take out travel insurance before his trip, Sam didn’t arrange any cover—a decision many young people make, thinking nothing will ever go wrong.

As a result of the fall, Sam has suffered a broken pelvis, fractures to the L4 and L5 vertebrae in his spine, and a broken leg. He’s currently in hospital overseas, in significant pain, and facing challenges in communication due to the language barrier. Doctors have confirmed he will require surgery on his pelvis, and he’s awaiting an MRI to determine whether spinal surgery is also needed.

This is a devastating situation for both Sam and his family Sam has a two-year-old son who’s missing his daddy deeply, and Sam is heartbroken that he can’t be there with him. He’s not only a father, but also a son and a brother—now stranded, in pain, and feeling isolated so far from home.

Being so far from home without insurance means he cannot be flown back to the UK unless we raise between £30,000 and £60,000 for a specialist repatriation flight. An alternative would be to secure accommodation in Cyprus for Sam and his family while he remains under medical care until he’s fit to return on a commercial flight.

In addition to fundraising, I am also launching a petition urging the UK government to make travel insurance a legal requirement for anyone travelling abroad. It could help prevent other families from enduring the same emotional and financial stress when a medical emergency happens far from home.
