On Sunday my Dads roof was torn apart in the 'once in a decade storm'! You may have seen footage of him on the Channel 7 news yesterday.
He was visiting a friend that had just come home from Chemo and therefore fortunately was not home at the time (thankfully) but received a phone call from the Police to deliver the news. We called the SES who did the best they could but the size of the area was so large that unfortunately they could not stop the water and even though we spent Monday purchasing and trying to secure more tarps, the damage unfortunately was already done.
Obviously not having any roof along an entire side of the house there is 5 or 6 areas where the ceilings have collapsed and in fact one of the photo's shows a ceiling he only recently had replaced and hadn't even had time to paint it, this along with others have now collapsed under the weight of the water damage. The walls are covered in dirt and debris from the ceilings coming down and the carpets flooded. The Solar panels he had fitted some years ago to alleviate the associated costs in his later years have all but smashed and are unusable, partly because they are sitting upside on the roof that's currently sitting in the back yard.
The force of the wind was that fierce that it pulled the top of the electric poles from the other side of the road which also ended up in the backyard.
Western Power cannot replace and reattach power to his house until he has a roof on - obviously the inclement weather doesn't help.
so yes I have set this page up and yes I'm upset and somewhat frustrated as to why Dad didn't have house insurance - we understand at times like this why insurance is a necessary evil but now isn't the time to ask why, I am simply trying to sort what is going to be id suggest an expensive process of replacing a complete roof, ceilings and flooring so any donation to my Dad who will be turning 80 on the 7th June would be very much appreciated.
I am very apprehensive as he is a proud man (as am I) so doing something like this is very difficult for me but under the circumstances im not sure what else I can do.
