I am starting a Go Fund Me account for my sister, Maggie Higgins. I never thought I would do something like this but my sister needs help, so here I am.
Maggie is someone, without exception, who would take the shirt off her back if she thought it would help someone. Even though she has a low lung capacity, she tirelessly volunteers at her church from putting together bulletins,to putting together boxes of food for the worlds poor to making items for the military. Pastor Mike Anderson has been a great help to Maggie in the past with keeping her spirit and faith going strong. Maggie is a selfless, wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Her can do spirit and lack of self pity has been an inspiration to me and her many friends. All of us want to immulate her and not feel so sorry for ourselves.
For or the past 13 years Maggie has been battling a mediastinal paragangiloma tumor in her heart. A nerve was damaged during the first attempt at tumor removal 13 years ago. Now she has little to no capacity to breathe out of her right lung. Two and a half years ago, Dr. Hillel Laks at UCLA removd 80% of the cancerous tumor from her heart and put in a barrier which he hoped would block the tumor from coming back. His efforts during the 11 1/2 hour surgery were heroic and he is so much appreciated. Unfortunately the tumor came back aggressively and is now back in her heart and has invaded her left lung, making her breathing very difficult. The doctors weren’t sure what to try next since chemo and freezing the tumor did nothing.
Maggie is tired. Beginning to lose hope. Out of the blue she reached out to the City of Hope and spoke to a Dr. Ravi Salgia who then referred her to Dr. Karel Pacak at The National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md. Dr. Pacak told her she has options and not to give up. He will be taking her on as a patient and we are all very hopeful that something can be done.
This is is why I’ve started this page. There will be trips to Maryland, hotels and food. She and her husband live on a fixed income so I’m asking my friends and hers to help her out with a small donation. Any amount will help. I’d like to give back to someone who has given so much.
