Dear family and friends,
We are working with Casa Hogar Santa Julia, an orphanage and foster home for girls in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Every summer we go to San Miguel de Allende to visit our grandparents. Last year we volunteered with Casa Hogar and spent time with the girls living there. This summer we were planning to go back to Casa Hogar to volunteer again, but because of Covid we weren’t able to travel to San Miguel. We are raising money to help them. If you decide to donate we will send you a handmade mask. Read on if you are interested!
Casa Hogar is one of two orphanages/foster homes for children in San Miguel. It was founded in 1954 along with a separate boy’s orphanage. Right now they have 27 girls living there between the ages of 5 and16. Casa Hogar provides housing, education and support to them.
Our experience last year volunteering was fun! We first met with the social worker to see what they needed. They said that they needed toiletries, so we brought them things like toothbrushes, shampoo, and soap, etc. We also went to spend time with the girls a few times. One day we brought games and coloring books, and the next time we taught them some PE games and built wooden airplanes with them.
Even though we were not able to go to San Miguel this year, we still wanted to find a way to help. We got in touch with Casa Hogar and they said that they need underwear and socks for all the girls at this time. They also said that they were creating a new PE space for them to play and exercise in but they are still growing it and still need more donations.
We are planning to send them packages of socks and underwear for all the girls. A way you can help if you are interested is donating some money to help us with this purchase. To give you an idea of how much it costs, about $15 will buy new socks and underwear for one of the younger girls; $30 will buy new socks, underwear and bras for the older girls. Any overflow money that we get we will use to help with some gym gear for their recreation space.
