As some of you may have heard Ferne and Dek had their beautiful baby boy Michael (Mikey) prematurely at 26 weeks gestation while Ferne was on holiday In NZ.
As you can imagine, this was not the plan.
Bit of a backstory:
Ferne and Dek tried for 2 years to have a baby and went through 3 rounds of IVF before getting pregnant. Needless to say when they found out the brilliant news they were both ecstatic and couldn’t believe they were finally going to be parents.
when Ferne was 14 weeks pregnant she decided she’d go to her home country NZ for a 3 week holiday for her nieces first birthday while the bubble was open..
On the day before she was to return there was a covid outbreak in NZ and they went into snap lockdown. Mark McGowan closed the borders to NZ and here starts the beginning of their incredibly stressful journey.
Ferne and her husband Declan tried numerous routes to get Ferne home, they got letter from her obstetrician, contacted immigration lawyers, contacted the department of border control but all to no avail.
On October the 4th at 25+5 weeks pregnant, Ferne’s waters broke unexpectedly. She went straight to hospital where she was later discharged and told to monitor closely. The next day at 25+6 Ferne woke up feeling unwell and had a temperature. She presented at ED again and was told at this stage that she had multiple infections and her little baby would have to be delivered in the next 12 hours as she her and her little baby’s life were in danger.
Ferne was absolutely distraught by this news and prayed and hoped that everything would be ok.
Later that day Ferne was airlifted to wellington hospital where she delivered her son Mikey via emergency c section at exactly 26 weeks gestation and 992 grams. This was the start of the longest, scariest journey of their lives.
Unfortunately Dek was in Perth and could not get a visa or a flight(due to lockdowns)
to be there for the birth of his much wanted baby and for his wife who was going through the most difficult time of her life.
Dek and Ferne went to multiple media outlets to share their story in the hopes that it would aid their plight for Dek to reunite
With his wife and his son.
Dek finally got his visa granted and entered NZ on 26th October, hotel quarantined for 2 weeks and got to see his wife
And baby on the 9th of November 2021.
Since then they have faced and overcome many hurdles including heart surgery , hernia surgery, infections, too many tests and procedures to name and many a sleepless night with baby Mickey fighting daily for his life.
Mikey is still in hospital and doing amazing. He is still on oxygen and being fed mainly through a tube but is improving daily and his future looks very bright.
However this has all put a massive financial strain on Ferne and Dek with both being out of work Since October and November and the expenses they have to pay while over in NZ i.e food, accommodation living etc and they are still paying for their expenses back in Perth also.
If anyone has a few dollars to spare please consider donating to this beautiful family and help ease at least some of the financial burden this little family have in this difficult time.
