Watch Aziz's story here: Survivors of the Yazidi Genocide

Who are the Yazidi people?

The refugee families in Sardashti Camp, Iraq, need your help urgently. The Yazidi are an ancient people whose history of persecution goes back more than 3000 years. During this time the population has dropped from 80 million to only 1 million survivors, who mostly live in Shingal and Shekhan, cities in Northern Iraq. On August 3rd 2014, ISIS took control of the city of Shingal and committed genocide against the people living there. Thousands of Yazidi men were executed and thousands of women and children were abducted and used as child soldiers and sexual slaves. The surviving families were forced to flee to the mountains as their homes were destroyed, and the city is still in ruin.

What is happening to them now?
Years after the genocide, many Yazidi families continue to live in refugee camps, one of which is Sardashti Camp, located in the mountains of Shingal, Iraq. These mountains are very significant to the community, as they are the only place they have felt safe throughout centuries of persecution. However, due to COVID-19 and the current instability of the Iraqi government, these mountains are not as safe as they once were. In fact, the Yazidi people are becoming increasingly vulnerable on every front. They are in immediate danger from hunger, illness and a fire that is currently approaching the camp, as well as constant danger from ISIS which has vowed to continue attacking these families.

How can we help?
Living in close conditions, with very limited access to health care, and no jobs due to lockdowns and restrictions, there are over 2300 Yazidi families going hungry in this refugee camp alone. Sardashti Camp Fundraising is working with Youth Bridge Organization, a local registered charity in Iraq, to provide food to these families. Without adequate food for survival, it is impossible for these families to rebuild their community and protect themselves from future threats.

Youth Bridge will provide food for families in packages which contain:
                5 kilos of rice
                1 bottle of tomato sauce
                2 bottles of oil
                2 kilos of sugar
                1 box of tea
                1 box of salt
1 package costs $20 CAD and can feed a family for 1 week.

How you can help: for $5: buy 1 family 5 kilos of rice
for $10: buy rice for 2 families
for $20: feed 1 family for 1 week
for $40: feed 2 families for 1 week
for $100: feed 5 families for 1 week

- Aziz Khudeeda, age 20, part of the Yazidi community of Shingal

Another student on our team, Kerry Yang (Canada) will be withdrawing the funds to send to Youth Bridge
