Help Feed Our Seniors at Lazy J Senior Mobile Home Park
Consider an 88-year-old neighbor who has called Lazy J home for over 35 years. They receive $600 a month in Social Security — but between space rent, utilities, and basic living expenses, they're spending around $800 a month before food, insurance, or anything unexpected. CalFresh helps, but even the maximum benefit of $298 leaves a $100+ monthly gap just to meet the basic cost of eating. There have been moments they went without a working refrigerator because there was no money to replace it. They go to bed when it gets dark to save on electricity. When they retired, their space rent was under $80 a month. Today it hovers near $550 — and that number keeps climbing since the park was sold to a corporation. A single missed grant application, a single rent increase, a single broken appliance stands between them and homelessness. They are not alone. When a rental assistance grant recently went unrenewed, 30 of Lazy J's 220 homeowners faced eviction notices simultaneously. These are good people who worked their whole lives, planted roots in a community, and now find themselves one corporate decision away from losing everything.
That's why our Small Food Pantry matters so much.
At Lazy J Senior Mobile Home Park, the Food Pantry is a quiet but vital lifeline. It can't solve every problem our residents face — but it can make sure that when everything else feels impossibly tight, there is still food on the table. For just $500 a month, we can keep the shelves stocked and the doors open for the seniors who need it most.
That's roughly $16 a day to bring dignity, nourishment, and a little breathing room to people who have given so much and now have so little margin left.
Every dollar goes directly to food. Whether it's a one-time gift or a recurring donation, your generosity makes a real difference in real lives right here in our community.
$10 stocks a shelf with canned goods
$25 provides a week's worth of staples for a resident
$50 helps feed multiple neighbors for weeks
No senior should have to choose between keeping the lights on and eating a meal, feeding their dog or feeding themselves, eating or becoming homeless. With your support, they won't have to.
About the Organizer:
My name is Rayna Avery — a lifelong Humboldt County resident, a proud member of the Lazy J community, and the founder and manager of our Small Food Pantry. I started this pantry because I see firsthand every day what my neighbors are up against. This isn't charity from the outside — it's neighbors taking care of neighbors.
