On January 21, our parents lost their home in a house fire. They survived, and we’re incredibly grateful for that—but nearly everything else was lost, including the sense of safety and stability they had worked so hard to create.
My stepmom, Fanny (58), lives with early-onset Alzheimer’s/dementia. Their home had finally been set up in a way that felt familiar and safe for her, which made a huge difference in her daily life and care. Losing that environment has been especially difficult.
My dad is 70 and has been her primary caregiver while also dealing with serious health issues of his own, including ongoing spinal pain that has delayed a necessary surgery. He also needs dentures, which affect his ability to eat, stay healthy, and feel like himself. Progress toward that was finally being made before the fire erased it.
Right now, our parents and their dog are staying with my sister Sarah. We’re grateful to be able to support them, but caregiving without proper in-home help has been exhausting and worrying—especially watching my dad push himself beyond his limits.
Our most immediate needs include:
• temporary caregiving support for Fanny
• food and basic necessities
• clothing and essentials lost in the fire
• medical needs, including dentures for my dad
We’ve reached the point where our resources are stretched thin, and we’re asking for a hand up as we work to regain stability. Any amount truly helps, and if you’re unable to donate, sharing this means just as much.
Thank you for your kindness and support—it means more than we can say.
With gratitude,
Shane, Sarah, Paul, Christian, and Alex Driscoll
