Rebuilding Hope in Scarlett Hall & the Montego Bay Autism Centre After Hurricane Melissa
A Community Shattered, But Not Broken
When Hurricane Melissa tore through Jamaica, it didn't just destroy buildings — it shattered lives, dreams, and the sense of safety that every family deserves.
The place I called home, Scarlett Hall — nestled on the border of Trelawny and St. James — is now unrecognizable. Families who had little to begin with now have nothing. Roofs have been ripped away, homes reduced to rubble, and parents are holding their children close with nowhere to shelter them from the rain that still falls.
But there's another tragedy that has unfold that breaks my heart even more deeply.
The Montego Bay Autism Center — a sanctuary for dozens of precious children with special needs — has been severely damaged. The roof is torn apart. Classrooms are exposed to the elements. And the children who depend on this safe, loving space for their education and care have nowhere to go. These are children who need routine, who need stability, who need us — and right now, their second home is in ruins.
Our Mission: Immediate Relief, Lasting Impact
I'm not waiting for someone else to help. I'm asking you to join me.
We're raising funds to deliver direct, urgent relief to:
- Families in Scarlett Hall — people I grew up with, neighbors who became family — who've lost everything and are struggling to survive day by day.
- The Montego Bay Autism Center — so that vulnerable children can return to the safe, nurturing environment they desperately need.
Every single dollar you give will be used to purchase and deliver recovery supplies and building materials **directly** to the people who need them most — no middlemen, no delays, just help when it's needed most.
What Your Generous Heart Will Provide
Thanks to a 30-day tax waiver on disaster relief imports announced by the Government of Jamaica, every contribution goes further. Your donations will help us bring in:
- Bottled water, canned food, and baby supplies — because no child should go hungry or thirsty
- Cleaning products, toiletries, and hygiene kits — restoring dignity in the midst of devastation
- Mattresses, bed linens, and clothing — so families don't have to sleep on wet concrete
- Tarpaulins — temporary roof coverings
- School supplies — because even in crisis, children deserve a future
- Tools and materials to help families rebuild with their own hands
- Sanitation items, lanterns, and fuel containers — basic needs that mean everything
Your kindness will be felt in every meal served, every tarp secured, every classroom rebuilt.
Complete Transparency, Real Impact
I promise you this: Every dollar will be accounted for.
You'll see regular updates with photos and videos showing exactly where your money goes — from the moment we purchase supplies to the moment they reach the hands of grateful families and the staff at the Autism Centre.
This is personal for me. These aren't statistics — they're my people. And I won't let them down.
(Note: If you'd prefer to support the broader national recovery, the official Jamaica Disaster Relief Fund is available. However, this campaign ensures your donation goes directly to Scarlett Hall and the Autism Center — where I can personally guarantee immediate, measurable impact.)
How You Can Be a Hero Today
- Donate whatever you can — Whatever you are compelled to give
- Share this campaign — your network could include the person who changes everything for us
- Spread the word — talk about Hurricane Melissa's destruction, talk about these children, keep our story alive
Together, we can give families their homes back. We can give children their safe space back. We can give my community hope back.
From the Bottom of My Heart
Scarlett Hall helped raise me. It taught me the meaning of community, resilience and humility. Now, I'm watching my neighbors — strong, proud people — picking through the wreckage of their lives, and it's breaking me.
But I also know something else: We are not alone.
The children at the Montego Bay Autism Center need us. The families sleeping under torn tarps need us. And I believe, with everything in me, that together we can answer that call.
Please, join me. Help us rebuild not just homes but hope itself.
With gratitude and faith,
Gamal Harding
